Material documents various aspects of social issues in America and throughout the world, including race relations, Communism and subversive activity, labor and industrial relations, ecumenical and individual church organizations, Judaism, Israel-Arab conflicts, Jews in America, and World War II, agriculture and rural life, alcoholism, birth control, cooperative societies, mental health and medical care. Materials were collected during the period 1938-1973 by Liston C. Pope, former Dean and professor of Social Ethics at the Yale Divinity School, and his students, to support his teaching. The collection includes pamphlets, brochures, typescripts, booklets, comic books, posters, cartoons, letters, memoranda, offprints, etc.

Liston Corlando Pope was born on September 6, 1909 in Thomasville, North Carolina. He was educated at Duke University (A.B., 1929; B.D., 1932) and Yale University (Ph.D., 1940). He served as pastor of churches in North Carolina and New Haven, Connecticut (1932-1938), professor of Social Ethics (1938-1973) and Dean (1949-1962) of Yale Divinity School, author and editor.
